it seems that mensa is for simpletons.

it recently came to my attention that the most well known high-iq society on earth is actually at the bottom of the pile when it comes to intelligence based clubs, a world presumably filled with a huge amount of back-slapping and cryptic in-jokes, and is probably scoffed at by members of other clubs whose mere existence is baffling to normal humans.

let’s first take a look at the statistics for our slightly stupid friend:

name: mensa

iq required for entry: 132

percentage of the population who would fail: 98%

number of members: approx. 100′000

at first glance the numbers look impressive. an iq of 132 is more than respectable and to be in the top 2% is good going.

until you look at these (click on the society’s name to go their website and apply for membership)…

8. ultranet

iq required: 164

percentile: 99.997%

members: <100

7. prometheus society

iq required: 164

percentile: 99.997%

members: 65

6. helliq society

iq required: 164

percentile: 99.997%

members: 39

5. mega society

iq required: 176

percentile: 99.9999%

members: 26

4. pi society

iq required: 176

percentile: 99.9999%

members: 8

3. pars society

iq required: 180

percentile: 99.99997%

members: 37

2. olympiq society

iq required: 180

percentile: 99.99997%

members: 12

1. giga society

iq required: 196

percentile: 99.9999999%

members: 7

incredible. to put that into some kind of perspective, the giga society is so difficult to gain entry to that approximately 6 out of every 6 billion people on earth are eligible.

at present there’s no high-iq society with a stricter entrance requirement and the club’s founder, paul cooijmans, says the aim of giga is

to honor the efforts of the very highest scorers, who are of great importance to the development of ultra-high-ceiling tests for mental abilities. a secondary goal is to make members of other iq societies realize they’re not all that, although they may think they are“.

  1. They might have a IQ of 196, but their web site sucks. It looks like crap in Firefox.

    I am not jealous. :P

  2. 2 DarkJesus

Just mensa for me unfortunately. My IQ is only meant to be around 140-145.

  3. 3 katulu

I love the elitism even between the elite.

  4. 4 deanimo

everyone wants to be separate from the masses even if they belong to it.

  5. I’m at 154 – I’ll give Mensa a shot.

I’m crazy as it is – I couldn’t imagine having an IQ of 196.

  6. 6 Russ

I agree for 7 of the smartest people on earth, they haven’t mastered web publishing thats for sure, or are even able to hire someone smart enough to do it for them. sounds like a load of crap to me. Nerds probably study the IQ test all day long.

  7. Mmm.. Only Mensa for me..

  8. 8 Sei

Isn’t the terrible coding a bit of a clue?

  9. There’s a typo on the Giga web site’s navigation bar, lol!

  10. 11 Moderately Intelligent

    I agree with DarkJesus.

That site is crap. It’s a big image that takes a long time to load and the text is unreadable.

They might be intelligent, but it sure seems they lack esthetic sense.

  11. 12 marlany

I may not be a genius, but i can do some impressive stuff like… like…

Oh, shit, I can do nothing. T_T

PS: Where can I get an IQ test? A real one, not one of those that scores me 140 for nothing.

  12. 13 moondancer

Trust me, this is not bragging, but I qualified for Mensa. I went to two meetings and was so disappointed with the caliber of members, have never returned. That was twenty eight years ago.

  13. 14 samantha

Just because someone has a high IQ, doesn’t mean they aren’t an idiot. It means they’re spacially aware, have a large vocabulary and can differentiate between subtle patterns….

Doesn’t automatically exclude them from the dipshit club.

  14. You’d think that people as smart as those in the Giga Society would be able to build a working contact form on their website. Or maybe their brains are so big, they don’t require the same methods of communication as us remedial humans.

  15. Whooda thunk? I like the number 100 alot. I’m sticking with it!

  16. @brem:

This is the guy who makes the gigaclub site. It explains a lot.

Mensa is already stupid enough of an idea. Who are these jokers kidding?
If you’re that friggin brilliant and spending your time starting/joining clubs like these, you should be shot for wasting oxygen.
I’ve always found IQ tests suspect. Considering they’re based off tests originally intended to identify the “feeble minded” and not smart cookies, I think all these test-proclaimed geniuses should consider themselves not-mentally-deficient and prove themselves in more constructive manners.

  18. How many work at Google or Microsoft?

Are there any members who read Deputy Dog who would care to comment

  19. 20 Q

Would that mean 7 of the members of the Olympiq Society are from the Giga Society? And 12 members of the Pars Society are from the Olympiq Society?

  20. 21 jenzie

Brem, lol that’s what i thought too.

  21. Sounds pretty pointless to me. Mensa is such a wanky thing you only hear about in movies and the Simpsons. Even if I had the IQ required to join I wouldn’t. My is 161 for the record*.

Wow. I’m impressed that virtually everyone who has responded is a genius in their own right (or in their own mind).

I’m thinking that 99.99999997% of you are either liars or just too ignorant to realize that the “iq test” you took on the internet isn’t worth the 10 minutes it took you to take it.

  23. I am confused.

The dictionary tells me that in the US a billion is represented by 1,000,000,000 or 10^9, whilst in the UK it is 1,000,000,000,000 or 10^12. Does that mean then that an American member of the Giga Society would be a few zeros less intelligent than a member from the UK?

OK, an admittedly weak attempt at some gentle humour. And I can but agree with all the comments above on how terrible the websites look. Especially in Firefox.

Declaring yourself to be more intelligent than the rest of humanity means very little. Applying that intelligence to solving some of the problems that beset the world would be far more laudable. So what if you are good at solving the types of questions posed in such tests – I mean, who cares? No one but you. If I had the IQ that would afford me entrance to such a society then I would hope I would be smart enough to realize it would be a total effing waste of time.

Ha, I am so dumb I actually clicked on the link in Scotty’s comment.

  24. I’m a member of Prometheus and I thank you for the publicity. Check out our qualifying test scores; you may be smarter than you think. Also, even if you scored, say, 135 on some test, it is possible that you are much smarter and scored too low on that particular test for some reason.

I should note that some IQ societies have more rigorously researched and normed entrance requirements than others. Some IQ tests are better than others.

  25. 26 Bill

Wow, you have to be in that small minority of people with a high QI but stupid enough to think it is a good idea to join a club biased solely upon IQ.

  26. 27 Genc

The level of IQ score is totally irrelevant once it goes beyond a certain point. This is because, you may have a high IQ but other components are what makes a person a valuable asset to society. Immagination, experience (all sorts), open mindedness, manners, ability to absorb and disseminate information, problem solving, ability to link various sets of knowledge and infere from those, all these, make a person “intelligent”.

I know many who have high IQs, but I do not think our species will gain much from their activity.

  27. I am going to have my own club with blackjack and hookers. You need an IQ of min. 250 to join. Apply now.

  28. I wonder how high your IQ has to get before you get tired of “cleverly” slipping the letters “IQ” in to the names of all your societies…?

  29. Somehow if you have to prove that you’re that smart — then I really don’t think you are all that smart. :)

  30. Just Mensa for me too….not that I would actually want to join something like that anyways….

  31. Just because you have a high IQ and can score well on a certain type of test doesn’t mean that you’re smart. :)

  32. 33 Choco

An intelligent person probably wouldn’t waste its time too much on it anyway, or as Feynman nicely tells regarding awards. But perhaps that’s common sense I guess..

  33. I think a genius once said it best: “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” I’m willing to bet that applies to ridiculously high intelligence as well. Oh, btw, that genius was Einstein. I wonder which of these groups he would not have been eligible to join.

  34. 35 rick'james

It amazes me how the high-intelligence-giga-corporation-we-own-the-world companies/societies etc are always able to have the most atrocious websites the world has ever seen. On the other hand, one might say, that they admire code more than art of visual pleasure… Whatever, I still think, and I will always think that these societies are built solely by hypocrite loners who somehow managed to pass the test of IQ with super score and now nothing else is left to prove in this world – just chilling out and pointing in everyones face that they are more superior than average Joe’s.

Jesus, people! Whoever cares that You have higher IQ than others? For Christ sake, it’s just a freaking test!!! Nor didn’t You paint Mona Lisa, nor did You write War and Piece! First DO SOMETHING great for society, and then build Your own secret one!

Excuse me for my poor english… I simply hate when some people use to think that they somehow are better than others by doing absolutely nothing

  35. 36 Lucky idiot

    Man im an idiot

    bottom of the bottom

but i bang this white cute girl everydY… mmmm .mmmmm. so pink and juicy……damn im happy

  36. I think these societies are a waste of time. I’m not speaking from jealousy (I have an IQ of 200–it’s been tested.) I would much rather apply my rather prodigious talents to the real business of making money, finding hot women to have sex with, and making more money.
