below are 11 incredible photos taken from space which illustrate just a few of earth’s fascinating geographical features and nature’s frightening unpredictability.

click on all pictures for humongous versions.

1. sri lankan coast, 26th december 2004

(above) the ocean rapidly retreats 400 metres on the south-western coast of sri lanka, just 5 minutes prior to the arrival of a devastating tsunami.

(above) the swirling waters continue to batter the coast just moments after the main wall of water has hit.

2. an alluvial fan, xinjiang province, china

(above) covering an area 56.6 x 61.3 km and taken on may 2nd, 2002, this photo shows an alluvial fan that formed on the southern border of the taklimakan desert in china. an alluvial fan usually forms as water leaves a canyon, each new stream eventually closing up due to sediment – the result being a triangle of active and inactive channels. the blue ones on the left are currently active.

3. retreating glaciers in the bhutan-himalaya

(above) a beautiful but clear sign that glaciers are slowly melting due to global warming. easily visible are the ends of most of these glacial valleys’ surfaces turning to water to form lakes, a trend which has been noticed only in the last few decades.

4. hurricane isabel, 2003

(above) this terrifying photo of hurricane isabel was taken on the international space station in 2003 and illustrates the immense size of the hurricane’s eye. this particular hurricane was the deadliest of 2003 and winds reached 165 mph at its peak.

5. greenland’s eastern coast, august 21st, 2003

(above) the fractal coastline of greenland and its numerous fjords as seen from space.

‘little spots of white in the water seem to be ice originating from the deeper fjords that reach all the way to the icecap covering most of the island.’ link

6. aurora borealis

(above) an astounding and spooky photo of the natural phenomenon known as aurora borealis, taken on-board space shuttle atlantis during the sts-117 mission.

7. a total solar eclipse from space, 1999

(above) the shadow of the moon covers part of earth on august 11th, 1999 in this photo taken from mir space station. this shadow raced across earth at 2000 km/h, all areas under the centre of it plunged into darkness during a total solar eclipse. this was apparently one the final photos taken from mir.

8. egmont national park, new zealand

(above) mt. egmont volcano last erupted in 1755 and is now situated at the centre of egmont national park. park regulations have ensured the survival of a forest which extends at a 9.5 km radius from the summit of the volcano, the result of which can be seen from space in the form of huge dark green disc. this photo was taken during the sts-110 mission, april 2002.

9. mt. etna eruption, october 2001

(above) taken from the international space station in 2001, this is a photo of a particularly violent eruption on the island of sicily which produced a cloud of ash that travelled as far as libya. on the humongous version of the photo lighter coloured smoke can be seen near the volcano – this was caused by lava igniting nearby forests.

10. richat structure, mauritania

(above) the cause of the richat structure in the sahara desert of mauritania has been debated for many years. at first it was thought to be a meteor impact crater due to its circularity but this has since been disproven due to the lack of shock-altered rock in its vicinity. this massive (30 mile diameter) oddity is now believed to have been a rock dome sculpted over time by erosion. this incredible image was taken by the advanced spaceborne thermal emission and reflection radiometer (aster) on october 7th, 2000.

Wow, all of these images are wondrous. I can only shake my head and try, although microscopically, to comprehend it.

  9. 9 kiwidude

Mt Taranaki, not Mt Egmont ;)

  10. 10 Jo Blo

I’m pretty sure the circular Mount Egmont/Taranaki boundry the is natural tree-line around the very steep and very circular volcano – I’ve been up there a few times and certainly no one is up there triming the forest back to comply with any park regulations.

  11. 11 Jo Blo

also, many glaciers around the world have lakes at the bottom, this alone isn’t evidence of global warming, but of the fact that ice melts :)

  12. sweeeeet!!

  13. Wow. It’s very fine!!

My blog was writing science theme of korean language.
I hope that science topic use this picture. ^^

  34. 34 suresh

hi i am stunned to see those amazing pics…4,6 and 7 were awesome…

  35. mooie plaatjes.

  36. 36 3b

Jo Blo, t’s well documented that the nearly perfect radius around Egmont Volcano correlates exactly with the boundaries established by the New Zealand Govt.

The bhutan-himalaya photo would have proved the point a little better with before and after photos. The Bhutan-Himalaya glaciers NEVER used to recede at all because temperatures at those latitudes did not get above freezing for long enough periods of time to significantly melt anything.

  37. Wow! Great compilation of images! The hurricane one is enough to strike fear into any man.

  38. 38 AMBER

hey that was a very interested article and those are some really cool pictures of the earth. but the question is are they real photos? hit me back

  39. The images are wonderful. I liked these three the most: an alluvial fan, xinjiang province, china, greenland’s eastern coast, egmont national park, new zealand.

  40. Here’s another picture and more viable explanation for the Richat Structure (#10):

  47. 47 deputydog

pink-o-commi – well i did believe in global warming, then you popped by and pretty much changed my beliefs instantly with that intelligent comment. thanks for the input.

  48. Truly amazing images. The pictures from Sri Lanka are a true indicator of the massive power of the sea. It was a terrible thing what happened to all those people.

Imagine so beautiful, unbelievable true in fact too.
No WORDS to describe the beauty of it, because the Earth seen from there show the entire home where we all live… All should only WATCH & WATCH & LIVE IN PEACE FOREVER.

Now think about those maniacs on this earth who hate to see this…
who hate to accept the natural wonder Earth which even Heaven slave for laying in a peace all around…
who live only for one think to achieve: to destroy entirely this incredible & only place hanging free in space where all human creatures, those more like animals and less, lives together, because no other planets wants to have them there!

  54. 54 Kola F.

This is just so beautiful and so fantastic real that one must only see it over and over again!
Breath-taking awesome images… Must the science never again die out!

  55. 55 Jack Sheppard

where in bloody hell is the 11th one?

  68. 69 James

As someone who has spent lots of time on glaciers, let me point out you don’t know what you’re talking about when you say “a beautiful but clear sign that glaciers are slowly melting due to global warming.”

There is this thing they invented just before global warming called “summers”. The glacier will be back. In fact, the planet will be in another ice age if you want to shut up and wait long enough.

  69. Realy cool :)

  70. thank for pic

What I saw,has an effect on me that there is a creative of this nice earth. And this is not anybody except GOD.

  73. Cool . Very nice.

  74. 75 Robert

The solar eclipse pic brings back very strong memories for me. I’ve always had a faciniation with WWII history. My brother and his family were visiting us in Germany so they and my family were at the Dachau prision camp and we had just exited the crematorium (sp?) when this solar eclipse began. Maybe it was pure coincidence but it was the most eerie and stoic moment of my life. My sister in law got some spectacular sequence shots of this eclipse and has them framed nicely in her basement. I can’t look at them without reviving a feeling of despair, and uncomprehension. Wish everyone in the world could experience the abominal feeling it brings up…it would never happen again.

  75. Beautiful. Great pictures.

  76. WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW, Wonderfullllllllllllllll, like no others.

    Thanks a lot

    fabulus stuff and very clever

  87. 88 joybell

i like it very much and would loveww to see more of our universe

  88. 89 Sara

Jo Blo- That is not the natural tree line on Mt. Egmont. No one is trimming the forest back. The green coming up to the base of the volcano is all agricultural land where the forest used to extend. The park tried to protect the forest up to a certain radius from the volcano. Sadly. this didn’t help the birds they were trying to protect, as they needed coastal areas as well as the area around the volcano and many of the birds that once inhabited the park don’t anymore. A classic mistake in protected lands planning.:)

  89. Very interesting photos…

    :-)

  90. 91 Derren Schoefield

woah the sri lankan ones are breathtaking and makes me think about how strong and mighty the sea really is. Sri lanka’s such a beautiful island as well..Didn’t deserve it..Well done though A+ work as always, R u English or American,

  104. 106 Mandragora

Absolutely breathtaking photographs. Regarding #10, I had just seen that “structure” in the Planet Earth: Deserts episode and wondered what it was. Thank you for enlightening me!

  105. The one that shows the shadow of the moon travelling across the surface of the earth, I like that one and the one on Hurricane Isabel is not too bad either. Cheers

  106. 108 Steph

I was in hurricane Isabel. Weird seeing it from a different view. It looks almost pretty — except for all of the death and destruction and such.

  107. Fantastic. Isnt Mother Nature priceless.

  133. 135 per ekelund

    incredible pictures! fantastic!

  134. 136 Glynn

Excellent Photo’s but I wouldn’t worry too much about global warming. We are told the dinosaurs survived for approximately 250 million years and there were no Ice caps then, so we could be in for a long haul.

If we don’t destroy each other first!!!!

  135. 137 Glynn

Would love to have been behind the camera too have photographed these wonders

  158. Waoow!! Amazing pictures! I liked the eclipse, awesome.

  159. most excellent pictures.

  160. 162 Rich

Is it my imagination or does #8 (egmont national park, new zealand) look like the Mandelb rot Set?

  161. Pictures of distorted people here are also amazing :)

  162. 164 Ian

No Rich, of course you are correct. All’s the same in nature: micro/macro. Is #10 a blue eye? #2 a seashell?

  163. 165 Dan

All pic are cool but no.6 are the most amazing for me..

  164. yep earth is so beautiful :) .. i like the alluvial fan pic

  165. global warming is caused by the holes in the ozone layer. Those holes would repair themselves IF our crazy butts would pull together and slow our rolls. Then our glaciers would be tight. Technology, technology only good so that we can see out mistakes from teh sky.

Support medical technology and nothing more. It should be a tradition to perserve what was traditioanlly here. We’ve had all that we’ve needed for quite some time.

  166. COOL PICS I WOULD LOVE TO SEE MORE OF THE TSUNAMI THO!

  167. I am trying to find out where I can acquire image #6. I have been searching all through the NASA archives without success. I even talked to one of the archivists for the Johnson Space Center and she couldn’t find it either. Any help you can give me on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Peter
